How FolkCity spends its time

Work is scoped for education and preservation. We do not sell advertising space inside catalogs, and we do not run commercial transit operations.

Digital Transit Archiving

Scanning, metadata, file naming, and public finding aids for streetcar photographs, maps, timetables, and rolling-stock notes. The goal is durable access, not a one-time image dump.

  • Collection inventories
  • Descriptive catalog records
  • Researcher access guidance

Public Education Programs

Guides and classroom outlines that treat urban transit as civic history: who rode, who built, which neighborhoods were connected, and what changed after abandonment.

  • School-ready reading paths
  • Community lecture outlines
  • Primary-source discussion prompts

Urban Heritage Consulting

Advisory support for museums, historical societies, and civic groups that hold transit artifacts or interpret former railway corridors.

  • Collection-care planning
  • Exhibit narrative review
  • Documentation standards

A working sequence

Most partner projects follow the same educational logic. First we understand what records exist. Then we stabilize descriptions so items can be found again. Then we write public language that a non-specialist can trust. Consulting is the same sequence applied to another organization’s holdings.

If you represent a school, library, or cultural nonprofit, start with the archive inquiry form. Describe the collection or teaching need in plain language. Curators will tell you whether the request fits an educational archive or should be referred elsewhere.
